An Overview
Agra was chosen as capital by Mughal Emperor Akba rwho himself constructed massive structures including Agra fort and fatehpur Sikri. Sandstone was used as building material on massive scale in his buildings which could survive wrath of time and most of them can be found in perfect shape as they were built. Akbar's successor Jahangir could not add much to his legacy besides completing some half built structures of Akbar including tomb of Akbar, Sikandara. Jahangi's son Shah Jahan was great builder and art lover who erected many beautiful and magnificent buildings at Agra, Delhi, Ajmer etc. Tajmahal was most beautiful and is considered as architectural marvel in the world. Mughal capital was shifted to Delhi during the reign of Shahjahan so not much attention was paid to Agra by later rulers. List of monuments in Agra with their breif description is provided below. Tajmahal - The monument of love
Tajmahal the monument with beautiful love story is the major tourist spot in Agra as well as India which no traveller wants to skip who is visiting india.This is all white marble structure constructed on the bank of Yamuna river by famous mughal emperor Shah Jahan in fond memory of his beloved wife Mumtaj. The building constitutes graves of Shah Jahan and Mumtaj Mahal over which mausoleum with a large bulbous dome and fine work of pietra dura (The art of inlay work of precious stones over other stones). Another imporatant feature of this building is well laid out gardens in Mughal style.
Friday closed; open for offering prayer in the mosque between 12 Noon to 2 P.M. Night viewing on Full Moon Day and two days before and after it, excluding Fridays and in the month of Ramzan Entrance charges : Indian Rs 10, Foreigner Rs 750 per person

Red Fort of Agra - World Heritage site
Red fort of Agra is wolrd heritage site located in Agra a city of Uttar Pradesh province in India. The foundation of fort was laid by Akbar the great Mughal emperor. There was extensive use of Red Sandstones in most of the buildings of the fort giving it the Name of Red fort of Agra. Some of the important structures in the fort are Shessh Mahal, Musamman Burj, Mina Masjid, Moti Masjid, Diwane-am, Diwan-e- khaas, Khaas Mahal.

Fatehpur Sikri - Capital city built by Akbar
Located on the outskirts of Agra, at a distance of about 26 miles, Fatehpur Sikri was capital of Akbar during the 1571 to 1585. The construction of the town was started to pay homage to seikh Salim Chishti a sufi saint who blessed Akbar with son. Sikandara - The tomb of mughal emperor Akbar

The tomb of itimad-ud-daula is important building constructed during the reign of Jahangir. Mehtab Bagh - Agra
The Mehtab Bagh in Agra is laid out in right symmetry and alignment with the Taj Mahal and it was intentionally built as an integral part of the original design of the Taj Mahal during the period from 1631 to 1635 A.D. It has been named as the ‘Mehtab Bagh’ or ‘The Moon Garden’ because it is an ideal point for viewing the Taj Mahal in romantic moonlight.
