Complete Tourist Information To Visit Udaipur In Rajasthan Udaipur has been an inspiration for countless artists , architects and poets over the years . Let us take a look at the events that led to its foundation and development . The previous capital Chittor (110 km from Udaipur) was heavily fortified , but for generations had been subjected to waves of mughal invasions .The enormously massive walls proved incapable of withstanding sustained sieges and after a third major siege ,the Maharana Udai Singh made a historic decision to abandon chittor for a safer place .Across lake pichola he found a safer place surrounded by a tree-clad Aravali mountains ;a green and pleasant area ,with a cooler climate compared to surrounding lands, water supply, fertile soil and plenty of good hunting. The lake was expanded and level raised, with a palace built to the side of the lake. The palace complex was added by 22 successive Maharanas, so the building one sees today spans five centuries. Maharana Udai singh was succeded by Maharana Pratap .He was the greatest of all the rulers of Udaipur . Owing to its geophysical conditions and valour of its rulers Udaipur remained unconquered for centuries.
